Congress Passes US$7.6 Billion National Budget for 2012

The Congress of Honduras last night approved a Lps 144.558 billion (US$7.6 billion) national budget for 2012. The total includes Lps 79.558 billion (US$4.2 billion) for the central government and Lps 65 billion (US$3.4 billion) regional and local governments. The new budget represents an increase of 7.8 percent over the current-year budget of Lps133.3 billion (US$7 billion), approved by Congress on December 2, 2010. The top priority continues to be the Ministry of Education, funded at Lps 23.226 billion (US$1.2 billion); Public Debt payments at Lps 13.006 billion (US$684 million); Public Health at Lps 10.657 billion (US$561 million); Interior and Population at Lps 3.76 billion (US$198 million); and Security at Lps 3.480 billion (US$183 million). The budget lines for Defense, Public Works and Transportation, and Finance each total more than Lps 2 billion (US$105 million). Of the Lps 65 billion allocated for regional and local spending, approximately one-third, or Lps 24 billion (US$1.3 billion), will go to the National Electrical Energy Company (Enee). (12/15/11)
