Honduras Weekly
The Honduran Ministry of Defense announced today announced that it will inaugurate a new naval base on the island of Guanaja in the Bay Islands of Honduras next month. The US$2 million facility, financed by the United States, will support joint efforts by Honduran and US military forces to combat organized crime and narco-trafficking in northeastern Honduras and the Caribbean Sea. When the completed, the base will consist of several buildings, a dock, and high technology equipment used to help track and intercept surface vessels, submarines, and aircraft. On April 8, 2010, the Honduran Navy, with US funding and engineering support, established the Caratasca Lagoon naval base in the department of Gracias a Dios. The base has launched operations which have resulted in the capture of numerous drug running boats, including the sinking of a small narco-submarine in July. The US maintains military personnel at Caratasca and plans to house a contingent of troops at Guanaja. (11/21/11)
