Cargo transporters are stopping the containers leaving Chiquita facilities, in Corinto. Around 40 trucks prevent the banana containers from leaving for Puerto Cortez, Honduras, claiming a tariff readjustment by miles covered.

The transporter Domingo Ramírez said that the shipping company Maersk Line came to a satisfactory agreement with the transporters in Corinto on Monday night and that there are positive practices with the companies Monisa, Harinisa and Sagsa Disagro.

"Only Chiquita is uncompromising. We ask for a tariff readjustment to US$1.20 per kilometre, even if the right level is US$1.40, due to an increase in fuel prices, lubricants. This company only pays us US$0.98, which is far from reality. We will not move until we have an answer," he pointed.

Containers to Puerto Cortez

He assured that if the company doesn't reach an agreement, they will intensify the action and will not let containers with bananas leave the company to go to Puerto Cortez to be exported.

The transporter Ubence Canales affirmed that they let trucks get in, but not out, as a pressuring measure against Chiquita, until they make the readjustment for the transportation payment to Europe.

Chiquita refused to coment.
