FNRP Moves to Exclude Liberal Party Moderates

PDF Print E-mail

The Popular National Resistance Front (FNRP) continues to show signs of discord among its rank and file. At a meeting this past weekend in Tocoa aimed at electing the leadership of the organization, the more radical members of the FNRP such as Juan Barahona prohibited the participation of representatives from the Liberal Party viewed as moderates, including Dagoberto Suazo, Rasel Tomé, Rodil Rivera Rodil, Edgardo Castro, Elvia Argentina Valle, Gloria Oquelí, Amable de Jesús Hernández, Carlos Eduardo Reina, and Adán Fúnez. The exclusion of Mr. Tomé and Mr. Reina is particularly notable, given that they are among the closest and most trusted advisers of former president Manuel Zelaya. Their forced absence from the process of determining who will lead the FNRP suggests that Mr. Zelaya may no longer wield the influence that he once did within the movement, and that the organization is now intent on becoming further radicalized to the left of the political spectrum. According to Mr. Reina, a delegation from Liberal Party members of the FNRP will travel to the Dominican Republic to explain their growing marginalization to Mr. Zelaya. The Liberals and the Resistance

This is one way to read what happened. Another way to interpret what happened is this. The Liberals in Resistance proposed adding more members to the national leadership committee of the FNRP. That would mean that the Liberals could add two more members to the representatives from each department. In some ways, this can be seen as a power play to try to take over the resistance and make it like another political party.
I would not characterize this as a move by moderates but as a power play by politicians.
