FNRP Moves to Exclude Liberal Party Moderates
Monday, 12 July 2010 10:02
The Popular National Resistance Front (FNRP) continues to show signs of discord among its rank and file. At a meeting this past weekend in Tocoa aimed at electing the leadership of the organization, the more radical members of the FNRP such as Juan Barahona prohibited the participation of representatives from the Liberal Party viewed as moderates, including Dagoberto Suazo, Rasel Tomé, Rodil Rivera Rodil, Edgardo Castro, Elvia Argentina Valle, Gloria Oquelí, Amable de Jesús Hernández, Carlos Eduardo Reina, and Adán Fúnez. The exclusion of Mr. Tomé and Mr. Reina is particularly notable, given that they are among the closest and most trusted advisers of former president Manuel Zelaya. Their forced absence from the process of determining who will lead the FNRP suggests that Mr. Zelaya may no longer wield the influence that he once did within the movement, and that the organization is now intent on becoming further radicalized to the left of the political spectrum. According to Mr. Reina, a delegation from Liberal Party members of the FNRP will travel to the Dominican Republic to explain their growing marginalization to Mr. Zelaya. I would not characterize this as a move by moderates but as a power play by politicians.
