Zelaya Rejects Liberal Party Overtures
Thursday, 15 July 2010 14:35
Former president Manuel Zelaya yesterday said that he would be willing to speak with leaders of the Liberal Party in Honduras only after they expel Roberto Micheletti from their party and bring to justice those responsible for the alleged politically-motivated assassinations of 166 people opposed to Mr. Zelaya's overthrow as president last summer. Mr. Micheletti served as interim president of Honduras from June 28, 2009 until January 27, 2010. He was voted into office by the Honduran Congress following the arrest and forced exile from Honduras of Mr. Zelaya on June 28. Mr. Zelaya's comments were in response to an announcement by the president of the Central Executive Council of the Liberal Party (CCEPL), Elvin Santos Lozano, that he plans to lead a delegation to the Dominican Republic to meet with Mr. Zelaya and discuss his eventual reconciliation with the party. Mr. Lozano is the father of former presidential candidate Elvin Santos. (7/15/10) (photo of Elvin Santos Lozano courtesy El Heraldo)
