Honduran Ambassador Visits College of Business

NEW ORLEANS, LA/March 8/Loyola University/ -- The United States Ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens will visit Loyola University New Orleans on Friday, March 12 to talk to College of Business students and faculty about U.S. policy in the western hemisphere and the recent Honduran political crisis. His talk takes place at 11:30 a.m. in Miller Hall, Room 114.

Llorens is a career foreign service officer who has served in the State Department since 1981 and as ambassador to Honduras since September 2008. He was in Honduras during the presidential coup d’état in June 2009 and the subsequent fall elections.

Prior to his work in Honduras, Llorens was a deputy chief of mission at American embassies in Madrid, Spain, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. From 2002-2003, he was the director of Andean affairs at the National Security Council, serving as the principal adviser to the U.S. president on issues related to Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. Throughout his decorated diplomatic career, Llorens has also been appointed to posts in Canada, El Salvador and the Philippines. He earned three superior and six meritorious awards from the department, received the prestigious Charles E. Cobb Jr. Award for Initiative and Success in Trade Development and was a runner-up for the Herbert Salzman Award for Excellence in International Economic Performance.

Before the foreign service, Llorens was an assistant treasurer at Chase Manhattan Bank’s international division in New York.

Llorens received a Master of Science in national security studies at the National War College in 1997; a Master of Arts in economics at the University of Kent at Canterbury, England in 1980; and a Bachelor of Science in foreign service from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in 1977.
