The government of Spain agreed on Friday to donate US$25 million to Honduras to fund potable water projects in more than 200 rural communities with populations of less than 2,000 people each. The money, which will be used to construct water purification plants, power and distribution systems and wells, will be channeled through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and disbursed by Honduras' National Autonomous Service for Aqueducts and Sewers (Sanaa). The deal was signed in Tegucigalpa by Humberto Gobitz of the IDB and the Honduran Vice-Minister for Investment and Public Credit, Evelyn Bautista. Design work on the projects and socioeconomic evaluations involving the first 69 communities is already underway. "In order to reduce infant mortality, it is important that children not contract cholera, and water and sanitation projects make areas more governable," said Spain's Ambassador to Honduras Luis Belzus de los Ríos.
