For visitors to Honduras, the country's pluses easily outweigh its negatives, but its negatives often tend to overshadow all that is good and attractive about it...
Honduras Weekly
It is unfortunate that Honduras does not do a better job of promoting itself to the world. Despite its social and political problems, the country remains one of the most naturally gifted and beautiful locations on earth. It has spectacular mountains and trails, pristine beaches, winding rivers, a full-fledged rainforest, stunningly colorful and unique flora, diverse wildlife and marine life, the second largest coral reef system in the world, ancient archaeological ruins, charming sleepy towns, colonial mission churches, rich indigenous cultures, sunsets to die for, and some of the warmest and most gracious people you'll ever come across in your entire life.
For visitors to Honduras, the country's pluses easily outweigh its negatives, but its negatives often tend to overshadow all that is good and attractive about it -- particularly if your main source of news about Honduras are newspapers, magazines, and television. The fact is that tourists do not have to look very hard to learn about the wonders of Honduras and the hospitality of its people. Just go online... but focus more on what your fellow travelers have to say about the country. Check out personal blogs where you can find non-commercial photos and read imperfect journal entries. Go to the guestbooks of websites that deal with Honduras and get a feel for what the writers liked and disliked about their experiences, and pay special attention to any suggestions or recommendations they may have.
One of the best websites on which to find honest and balanced reviews about places to go, see, and savor in Honduras is Trip Advisor. The site provides a wealth of intimate insights, which should be widely shared so that anyone considering Honduras as a travel destination can have a more complete picture of what the country has to offer.
Honduras Weekly plans to begin regularly reviewing the reviews posted on Trip Advisor. We will randomly pick a hotel or a restaurant or a town or an activity, or some other attraction or place. We will select some of the more interesting and substantial reviews, and then make a few observations, perhaps identifying some consistencies or inconsistencies, and come up with a brief conclusion or two.
Look for our first review of Trip Advisor reviews on Honduras later this week. We will start with Hacienda San Lucas, a mountain lodge located just outside the town of Copán Ruinas in northwestern Honduras. (11/13/11)
